Redefine Properties
Head of ESG
Never underestimate the power of space. Whether it’s a space you live, work, or gather, spaces have the inherent potential to inspire new ideas, incite meaningful action, and instil a sense of purpose that takes people and the spaces themselves forward.
As South African corporations step up to the challenge of supporting nationwide socio-economic development, with a corporate social investment (CSI) now being a hallmark of any modern enterprise, the commercial real estate sector and leaders like Redefine Properties are leveraging the power of space to transform lives and communities. By tapping into the spaces we establish in and around communities, we create new opportunities and contribute to building a smarter, more sustainable future.
Evolving beyond traditional CSI
Though commercial real estate may still be under pressure due to high finance costs and a competitive market, industry players are responsible for playing an active role in the overall development of a nation. After all, it is a sector that inherently wields the power to bring people together and imbue a space with a shared purpose and vision.
It is that responsibility that has led Redefine Properties to evolve from a CSI strategy to a socio-economic development (SED) strategy, one that encompasses all objectives, including embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion into our value chain, enabling people through digital transformation and technological advancements, transitioning to a service-based business model centred around collaboration and partnership, and fostering a culture of curiosity and innovation.
Education, well-being, and other arenas of change
As part of Redefine’s drive to be a catalyst for good, one of our goals has been to achieve the 2030 UN Social Development Goals that we have committed ourselves to, aligning with our key focus areas and initiatives across South Africa.
Quality education is a journey that must begin at an early age, which is why Redefine supports institutions such as Hawk Academy, an independent English-medium school in Primrose, Johannesburg, House of Angels Academy in Midrand, and Vivian’s Creche in Thulisa Park, as well as multiple community hubs that offer state-of-the-art facilities and educational programmes.
Not far behind education is providing primary healthcare, additional services, and economic opportunities to children and adults, particularly in underserved areas lacking sufficient resources. Through initiatives such as the 12 Piet Mobile Clinic and Western Cape Blood Service, Redefine dedicates space for people to access these vital services. Also, by investing in projects such as the Rooftop Garden at Kenilworth Shopping Centre and the Magnet Theatre in Cape Town, Redefine is helping to create opportunities for the people who need them most.
Empowering communities through job creation
The impact of Redefine’s efforts is far-reaching, with tangible results seen in job creation across South Africa. According to AIRE Consulting’s socio-economic impact assessment report conducted in August 2024, the overall impact of our business has resulted in the creation of over 12,000 jobs, with a significant contribution to the growth of SMMEs. Of these, more than 6,000 jobs have been created by black-owned SMMEs, illustrating the powerful role that our business plays in driving inclusive socio-economic progress. This data is based on our entire business operation and are powerful statistics supporting our overall strategy and demonstrating the impact in our communities.
The power and impact of spaces are not limited to shopping for your daily groceries or working on assignments at the office. By creating and supporting spaces for good, operators not only unlock new value but also play a leading role in the fundamental development of the nation. It all starts with redefining what’s possible and recognising our responsibility to inspire change.
