Construction has officially begun on The Granger, a landmark R2-billion mixed-use development set to reshape one of Cape Town’s most strategically positioned urban precincts. Located alongside the DHL Stadium in Green Point, the project occupies one of the last major undeveloped parcels between the Cape Town CBD and the Atlantic Seaboard—ground that has long been considered a prime gap in the city’s development landscape.
A sod-turning ceremony on 6 November marked the formal start of construction, with City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos, joining developers Devmark Property Group and the Feenstra Group to signal the beginning of a four-year build programme. Construction is anticipated to continue through 2027, with completion targeted for early 2028.
The Granger—distinct and unrelated to the V&A Waterfront’s multi-billion-rand Granger Bay expansion—aims to become a new focal point for hospitality, business, and contemporary urban living. Its programme includes a 190-room international hotel, 200 apartments, 14 000m² of P-grade office space, and 3 000m² of ground-floor retail. The developers say the scheme is intentionally designed to complement and integrate with the broader sports, tourism, and leisure hub anchored by the DHL Stadium.
“This is an exciting project that will transform this part of the city into a vibrant, connected precinct,” said Vos. “It’s exactly the kind of development that brings Cape Town’s economic strategy to life—one that creates jobs, attracts investment, and supports small businesses.”
The joint venture blends Devmark’s long record in residential and mixed-use developments with Pretoria-based Feenstra Group’s commercial and industrial expertise. Rand Merchant Bank has concluded funding for the project, signalling strong institutional confidence in the Green Point node and its long-term growth potential.
For Devmark executive chair, Hein Ehlers, The Granger represents a rare opportunity to deliver a development of scale within a precinct that already attracts over 1.2 million annual visitors through stadium events, concerts, conferences, and major sporting fixtures.
“Our goal is for this project to complement the stadium while also standing proudly alongside it,” Ehlers said. “We’ve been intentional in our design approach, aiming to carry the energy of stadium events into a vibrant, year-round destination.”
Feenstra Group CEO Pieter Feenstra emphasised that while the stadium is a significant asset, the surrounding landscape has remained under-integrated. “The stadium currently feels somewhat isolated,” he said. “By introducing hotels, retail, residential and P-grade office space, The Granger will knit together the precinct, boost tourism, support local businesses, and enhance convenience for residents and visitors. Delivering a development of this magnitude is a milestone for South Africa.”
The project arrives at a time of broader development momentum along the western edge of the city, including the R20-billion Granger Bay extension of the V&A Waterfront, new luxury hotels, reclamation works, and expanded residential and retail offerings.
As construction progresses, The Granger is expected to catalyse further activity around Green Point, strengthening Cape Town’s positioning as a globally competitive destination for investment, events tourism, and mixed-use urban living.
