As we look forward to another vibrant festive season, the malls within the Insurance and Asset Management business line of the Standard Bank Group have thoughtfully prepared to ensure families across South Africa enjoy a truly memorable holiday. At the heart of this initiative is creating an enchanting experience that captures the warmth, joy and excitement of cherished traditions and family time – while also offering abundant shopping opportunities, year-end celebrations and everything needed to prepare for the new year and school season.
“During December, malls become anchors for communities, working parents, a place to entertain, work and shop while still prioritising what is important,” says Jonathan Sinden, Commercial and Operations Property Executive. “That is why we’ve dedicated our efforts to turning our malls into vibrant hubs of comfort and joy, designed to meet the diverse needs of South Africans throughout the festive season.”
Sandton City (Johannesburg)
Sandton City has launched its first-ever City of Enchantment from 5 to 28 December, transforming its centre court into a festive, interactive space for families. Children can decorate cookies and doughnuts, personalise baubles and trees, and write letters to Santa, who will be available for photos from 5 to 24 December. Adults can enjoy the Château Gâteaux pop-up offering drinks and cakes.
The centre will also feature new holiday décor, extended shopping hours, and gift-wrapping stations supporting the SPCA. Most stores will operate from 9 am to 9 pm in the lead-up to Christmas, with selected openings on 25 December and 1 January.
Eastgate Shopping Centre (Johannesburg)
Eastgate Shopping Centre is celebrating the festive season with a new activation, Candy Cane Lane, running from 10 to 24 December in the Strelitzia Court. The family-friendly experience offers interactive entertainment, festive treats, and creative activities daily from 10am to 6 pm.
Visitors can enjoy festive-themed ice cream, a North Pole claw machine, Rudolph’s Gaming Station, and face painting. Two optional experiences – decorating doughnuts at the Christmas Cottage and creating sweet-filled baubles – allow guests to make personalised keepsakes.
Additional festive offerings at Eastgate include photos with Santa (5–24 December), a gift-wrapping station supporting charity, live Christmas carol performances on selected evenings, and extended shopping hours from 12–23 December. Shoppers can also explore over 200 stores, dining options, and entertainment attractions, including IndyKart, Roadhouse Roller Rink, Ster Kinekor, and Air360.
Nelson Mandela Square (Johannesburg)
Nelson Mandela Square is hosting celebrations from 12 to 22 December, offering visitors a festive experience in a specially designed glass marquee. Open daily from 4 to 9 pm. The marquee features seasonal décor, lounge areas, and live violin performances from 6 to 8 pm, creating a relaxed environment for browsing and socialising. Visitors can explore a curated selection of local vendors offering artisanal gifts, floral arrangements, handcrafted décor, festive treats and speciality foods from brands including Babylonstoren, Veldmeisie, Oooh La La, Casa LV and others.
Promenade Mall (Mitchell’s Plain – Western Cape)
Promenade Mall is launching the Sweet Festive Trail from 12 to 23 December, transforming its former cinema space into an interactive holiday experience for families. Visitors can enjoy hands-on activities, including decorating cookie houses, crafting baubles and photo frames, and exploring themed photo opportunities. The activities rotate every four days, offering something new with each visit.
Santa Claus will also be at the centre from 1 to 24 December for photos and festive wishes, while the mall will extend trading hours from 16 to 24 December to accommodate holiday shopping. Proceeds from the tickets will support local youth initiatives, including school essentials for underprivileged students.
Midlands Mall (KwaZulu-Natal)
Midlands Mall welcomes the 2025 festive season with a series of creative and community-focused activities. From 12 to 24 December, the centre court will host The Festive Artspace – A Fresh Canvas, offering families hands-on art activities, from bag decorating to DIY sand bottles, alongside interactive play areas, including a ball pond and giant building blocks. Entry to the space is free.
Visitors can also enjoy photos with Santa and participate in the mall’s annual charity gift-wrapping initiative, supporting The Pietermaritzburg Community Chest. Extended shopping hours from 12 to 23 December will allow shoppers a more relaxed experience.
A highlight of the season is a 7.5-metre Disney Chari-Tree featuring Disney plush toys, including Stitch, encouraging shoppers to contribute to Reach for a Dream.
“Our malls offer the perfect mix of entertainment, shopping and dining to ensure families enjoy a festive season filled with joy and lasting memories,” concludes Sinden.
