The Bridge, a 340-hectare mixed-use precinct designed to redefine urban development in the region has been launched. Officially unveiled with speeches from leaders including Dr Ivan Meyer, Western Cape Provincial Minister, and representatives from Stellenbosch Municipality, Stellenbosch University, and Wesgro, the project promises R60 billion in economic investment and 13,000 permanent jobs. Developed by Stellenbosch Bridge Properties, The Bridge reflects a vision of community-focused growth, sustainability, and innovation.
Dr. Meyer highlighted the alignment of The Bridge with the Government of National Unity’s goals of building an inclusive economy, reducing poverty, and fostering a capable state. “With Klapmuts here and Stellenbosch there – this project is the perfect example of an inclusive economy,” he said. He praised the collaboration among Stellenbosch University, Stellenbosch Municipality, and the Western Cape government, calling the precinct a “case study” for inclusive growth.
The project’s potential to stimulate economic and social upliftment within Stellenbosch was a central theme. Representatives from Stellenbosch Municipality celebrated the precinct’s commitment to creating a vibrant destination where community meets innovation. Anita Nel, from Stellenbosch University commended the development as the “perfect place” for the university’s LaunchLab, bringing startups and research institutions closer to nature and society. “It speaks to all the values of Stellenbosch University,” she remarked.
At the heart of The Bridge’s design is sustainability. Development Manager Lorne Dawson explained that each phase meets rigorous environmental standards, establishing a legacy for future generations.
Strategically located along the N1 between Cape Town, Stellenbosch, and Paarl, The Bridge combines business, technology, and modern living, anchored by an innovation precinct developed with Stellenbosch University. This hub is set to attract startups, established businesses, and research institutions, positioning Stellenbosch as a node for innovation in South Africa. Wesgro CEO Wrenelle Stander affirmed, “The Bridge is ideal for businesses seeking an innovative, high-quality lifestyle environment. We are on track to become the Western Cape’s premier Smart City.”
With commercial, retail, and recreational spaces, The Bridge supports an integrated, walkable community where urban life and commerce coexist. Dr. Meyer summarised the vision: “The Bridge precinct is a programme for the future, connecting urban and rural areas and helping to eradicate poverty.” This landmark project underscores Stellenbosch’s commitment to a sustainable, inclusive future, setting a new standard for South African development.
