The eagerly anticipated Westown Square, the first phase of the Westown mixed-use development, is set to open on 27 March 2025 in KwaZulu-Natal. This innovative project, dubbed the “city of the West,” is strategically located on the N3 corridor between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, and aims to replicate the economic dynamism of Midrand in the region.
Developed by Fundamentum Property Group, Westown is poised to become the new economic nucleus of West Durban. The overall development is projected to attract an impressive R15 billion in investments over a span of 10 to 15 years. This surge in economic activity underscores Westown’s potential to transform into a vital economic driver within the region.
Westown Square Mall, along with The Barn, will be central features of the first phase, covering approximately 50,000 square meters. Unlike traditional malls, Westown Square will seamlessly blend retail, dining, and event spaces, fostering an engaging atmosphere that encourages exploration and interaction.
The Barn, strategically positioned at the heart of Westown Square, is set to offer a distinctive high-street market experience. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore a diverse array of unique artisanal homeware, art, beauty, and fashion outlets. This synergy between The Barn and the diverse tenant mix at Westown Square will create a unique shopping environment anticipated to become a key destination for both locals and tourists.
The confirmed tenant lineup at Westown Square includes a mix of well-known and diverse brands, such as Checkers Hyper, Total Ninja, Edgars, Elephant and Co., Pick n Pay, Joita’s, Clicks, ChelinoBaby, Spur Steak Ranches, Dis-Chem Health, Sorbet Group, Telkom, Mr Price Home, Flowers & Leaves, Dukkah Restaurant & Bar, Spec-Savers, Joop’s Place, Studio 88, Smock & Stitch, Standard Bank, Milady’s, Mr Price Weekend, The Filthy Moustache, and First National Bank.
Beyond the mall, developers are also initiating a series of subsequent projects within Westown. Key among these is the residential development Shongweni Eco Park, an investment of R2 billion by JSE-listed Balwin Properties. This lifestyle estate will feature 1,260 apartments, spread across 20 phases over the coming years, and will include amenities like a Training Science Gym, children’s play area, swimming pool, and concierge service.
Westown is also set to accommodate a range of sectors including logistics, healthcare, warehousing, commercial activities, and tourism opportunities. The Farrier Business Park is expected to emerge as a prime warehousing and logistics hub, while Parc Ferme is designed to become a motor-focused commercial center.
The ambitious development is supported not only by private investments from Fundamentum and Absa Commercial and Investment Bank but also by the eThekwini Municipality, which is injecting approximately R600 million into essential infrastructure, comprising roads, water, wastewater, and electricity.
Together, these efforts are geared towards establishing Westown as a pivotal economic and lifestyle destination in KwaZulu-Natal, promising significant growth and vitality for the region in the years to come.
